The historiographical output of Tacitus provides an extraordinary testimony to the world of ancient Rome during the first decades of the Empire. However, to better contextualize the events described or to provide them with historical precedents, the historian frequently punctuates his narrative with numerous references to the Republican era. These digressions, varying in length and precision, often reveal a detailed and accurate knowledge of Republican Rome—particularly its institutions and governing bodies. This volume aims to delve into and explore this under-investigated aspect of Tacitean historiography, contributing to our understanding of one of the greatest historians bequeathed to us by antiquity.
