Luchino Franciosa (1887–1983) was an agronomist, statistician, and geographer of Lucanian origin who, among his various works, produced an estimate in the late 1930s of Italy's gross agricultural production before and after the 1929 crisis. Although it remained unpublished and lacked its statistical appendix, the study nevertheless holds significant value for analyzing the recession and its impact on the peninsula’s primary sector; it contains a diachronic reconstruction that is statistically homogeneous and detailed down to at least the provincial level. In addition to publishing the original typescript, this Quaderno explores Franciosa’s scientific biography, reconstructing part of the lost data and analyzing the circumstances under which such a statistical work was produced. It also examines its methodological characteristics and limitations, as well as its relevance to the study of agriculture during the interwar period.
